DSM were appointed by our client New Substance as Principal Contractor, to demolish and clear a retired North Sea off-shore gas rig at Weston Super Mare on the Somerset Coast. The rig had been transported on shore and transformed into a 35m high 500 tonne art installation and visitor experience by New Substance as part of a nationwide arts festival “Unboxed”.

When the former rig was stripped back to its original configuration following the festival, DSM used our specifically modified CAT 6015B demolition rig ( known as “The Beast”) to systematically reduce and clear the rig. The 250 tonne demolition rig equipped with a 10 Tonne Fortress shear attachment safely dismantled the ex-rig following designed pre-weakening of the structure, carried out manually using flame cutting equipment. The dismantling operations were carried out on a confined site surrounded by numerous live gas and electricity services.
